The UC Berkeley Art Practice Department offers an undergraduate program in studio art which provides a firm grounding in basic techniques and principles while encouraging guided experimentation. Our curriculum is designed to teach students to think visually and develop a creative intelligence through the disciplined practice of art.

Nosotros provide technical and conceptual training in virtually traditional and new media: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture (wood, metal, ceramic, and mixed media), digital photography, installation, operation, social practice, video, sound, animation, and game pattern. Art Majors are expected to round out the required studio courses with Art History and theory classes. Each semester the Honors Studio Plan awards studios to ix senior Art Practice majors who show infrequent commitment and hope.

The Art Practice Department seeks to graduate students who demonstrate an original vision in their approach to practice, form, and content and who have the potential for significant artistic and cultural touch. Successful Fine art Exercise graduates sympathize the professional person fine art world and are articulate about their piece of work. They are deeply engaged with their art forms, rigorously committed to their craft, and interdisciplinary in their media, methods, and creative research. Students graduating with a major in Fine art Practice keep to pursue careers in a host of artistic fields, including equally professional artists, art directors, arts educators, and arts-related jobs with museums, galleries, arts management, design firms, publishing, and artists' organizations.

Curriculum

The UC Berkeley Department of Art Do offers an undergraduate plan in studio art which provides a firm grounding in bones techniques and principles while encouraging guided experimentation. All the courses nosotros offer in a given semester are listed at guide.berkeley.edu.

By the completion of their degree, students will have acquired:

• Excellent creative enquiry and visual communication skills

• Fine art practice skills in a wide range of media and disciplines

• Solid vocabulary for understanding, sharing, and discussing global arts and visual cultures

• Creative language for personal expression with unique methods and aesthetics

• Capacity to work collaboratively on creative projects

• Ability to express creative work professionally through writing, reproduction, and curation

Art Practice Classes

While the undergraduate major is made up largely of Art Practice studio courses, it also requires at least iii courses in Art History. Our students are required to be broadly familiar with the aesthetic strategies that artists have devised to understand and invent their worlds, not just in the 20th and 21st centuries, simply across the history of human culture.

Field trips to area museums, galleries, and artists' studios provide an of import on-site learning tool, one which emphasizes the pedagogical primacy of straight contact with works of fine art.

Studio classes with frequent group critiques are designed to foster a supportive community, productive argue, and collaborative thinking. Students are encouraged to be both open-minded and tough-minded: to await closely, retrieve critically, and challenge assumptions.

Almost upper-division studio courses involve an exhibition requirement when students are asked to consider questions of audience, context, site, and timing. Several gallery spaces, amongst them the Worth Ryder Fine art Gallery (located in the Architecture + Art Exercise Edifice) and Platform Art Space (Wurster Hall) offer exhibition venues.

Prerequisite Checklist:

• Must accept an overall minimum GPA of 3.three

• Consummate R&C (Reading & Comprehension) requirements

• Complete or be enrolled in two studio courses: ART viii (required)  and one other lower division studio art grade (taken at either UC Berkeley or a community college).

• Consummate one lower partitioning Art History course (any)

Application Materials overview:

1. Digital portfolio of 12 jpg images

2. Copy of UCB transcript (unofficial is fine).

3. Re-create of all previous college transcripts (if a transfer educatee)

4. Statement of intent addressing the following two questions

   Delight tell u.s.a. why you are applying for the Art Do major. What do you await to gain from the program?

   Describe one of your artworks in your submitted portfolio. What do you lot think is successful almost it? What would you change? What will proceed from this work to your new work?

5. Optional: Epitome list; URL links to video or media samples

Upon review, applications that have met the criteria for the Art Major will be notified for blessing. If your application is denied, y'all may resubmit the following semester. All materials including the portfolio are reviewed once per semester. Students tin can apply to declare an Art Major at whatever time in their student career.

The Kinesthesia Undergraduate Advisor and Student Services Advisor will hold lunchtime Q+A sessions a few weeks earlier the awarding deadline to provide support and answer question near the declaring process and feedback on portfolios. These dates will be announced in the beginning of each semester.

BA Resource for Transfer Students

Transfer students from Community Colleges grade a core role of the BA programme.

Transfer students form a core part of our BA program. We welcome about 20 transfer students per year from Community Colleges and Junior Colleges. Graduation requirements for transfer students are the aforementioned as for all other students.

Many of the lower-sectionalisation art courses transfer students have already completed can be counted towards the BA degree. The student advisor helps transfer students become transfer credit for their coursework.

Declaring the Major is a requirement for enrolling in upper Division courses. Transfer students are eligible to use to declare the major in their offset semester. Deadlines for declarations are in October and in February — please meet the dates listed in the "Quick Links" sidebar. Transfer student portfolios oftentimes include work completed prior to arrival at UC Berkeley. Typically transfer students consummate their BA degrees in four semesters.

BA Resources for Veterans

UC Berkeley welcomes and supports military veterans. CalVeterans is a support arrangement that helps veterans access their benefits as they pursue higher educational activity. It is staffed by Cal Alumni veterans who can guide applicants through the procedure of completing their degree at Cal. MFA alum and Art Practice staff member Ehren Tool is a veteran and key member of the Section.
